The WordPress theme you choose for your site has a big part to play. A good website has to be equal parts functional and aesthetic.

An ugly website won’t get you far! Neither will one that’s a headache to navigate.

Whether you’re just about to launch your first site, or read for an upgrade, either way you want it to look good and be easy to use.

Nothing is worse than getting a WordPress theme that looks beautiful but is useless and frustrating when you actually try to use it.

It’s an easy mistake to make, but, since you are here… I am going to help you avoid that!

A WordPress theme is essentially a website template; a coded template that lays the foundation for your website.

It’s a group of files that work together to create the look and function of your website.

Like I mentioned above, it lays the foundation, it doesn’t do everything for you.  If we use a house analogy, it’s the brick, mortar and roof; you still need to make some customizations to where you want the windows, doors, the wall colours and décor.

For a website, these customizations can include your navigation bar, header, website colours and features like image gallery and blog.

The major advantage to a WordPress theme is you don’t need an understanding of coding to use it, so even those with zero experience can create a stunning site.

So now that you know you are going to need a WordPress theme, which one do you choose?

Choosing the right WordPress theme is one of the most challenging parts when starting a blog.  There are so many options out there, free and paid, that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

If you are starting to feel that way and don’t know what WordPress theme to use, don’t worry!  I have been in the exact same position you are in right now; I have tried some awful themes and some amazing ones.

When deciding between a free and paid WordPress theme, the biggest difference is you will have many more features with paid WordPress themes and therefore, you will be able to make more customizations.

There is so much to think about, but the good news is I’ve done all the groundwork for you! I’ve compiled a list of my 4 all-time favourite WordPress themes.

Listed in no particular order, I will give you a quick run down of each, and highlight the best feature to help you decide which one is best for your website..

1. Divi Theme

Divi is the most popular WordPress theme available, and for good reason.

Divi allows for so much customization you can build your website exactly how you want.  This means creating custom headers, pages, blog templates, product pages and more.

It’s the theme I currently use on my website and I love it.

To use the house analogy again, it’s like a mansion. It lays a BIG foundation for everything and any future remodelling you want to do. The downside is, just like a mansion costs more than your average home, Divi costs a bit more than your average WordPress theme.

That said, it’s definitely worth the investment as you will be able to stick with this theme as you grow your site and can even completely rebrand and change up your look while keeping the same theme.

Best Feature:  Endless options for customizations meaning you won’t have to settle on anything.

You can get your website to look exactly how you want it.

With Divi, you have access to over 800 premade website layouts making it super easy for those new to blogging and website development.

2. Foodiepro

I love Foodiepro because of its minimalist look and superior flexibility.  The theme customizer allows you to control the design with ease.

You can easily change the colours, settings, and images to make it match your brand.   If you are looking to start a food blog, you need a theme that will get your recipes seen on search engines.  There are lots of options for categorizing recipes and displaying the most popular posts.

Many professional food bloggers use Foodiepro and it continues to be one of the most popular themes.

Using a WordPress theme specifically designed for a food blog is like a restauranteur buying a fully functioning restaurant vs. an empty building – the heavy lifting has already been done, you just need to add those recipes!

Best Feature: It’s perfect for food bloggers.

For search engines like Google to find your recipes, they will need to be added to your blog in a specific way that will make it easy for search engines to show your recipe in their results.

Foodiepro offers incredible widgets and plugins that make it so easy for the user to input a recipe and add pictures.

3. Refined

As the name states, this WordPress truly is refined. For an elegant and eye-catching theme, Refined is the way to go.

This theme has a light and airy look that can be customized until it’s just right!

This theme is great for Ecommerce shops or creatives like painters, photographers, artists and lifestyle bloggers.  The image grid is perfect for showing off products or your latest creation.

Best Feature:  The best feature here is the look of the theme – it’s striking and sleek.

With a number of awesome plugins built-in, you can add social media icons, sliding image galleries that compliment the look of the website for a cohesive look.

PRICE: $129.95

4. Astra

The fourth WordPress theme on my list is Astra.

Astra is a fully customizable theme with a focus on SEO.  The foundation of this theme includes special software that is favoured by search engines, making it more likely to get your website shown in search results.

This theme is perfect for business and Ecommerce sites alike.

Best Feature: The fact that this WordPress is WooCommerce (ecommerce platform) ready, makes it so easy to sell items on your website.

If you want to monetize your blog or exclusively sell products, having these capabilities built in will make it so much easier for you to set up.

What to Look for in a WordPress Theme

  • Keep it simple. A good theme needs to be easy to navigate, easy to read, and most importantly it needs to allow people to effortlessly share your posts. Forget fancy fonts that you can’t understand, and make sure people can engage with your content by having social icons and sharing buttons.
  • It has to be responsive. In this day and age, most people will look at your website on different devices. If your blog looks perfect on desktop, but it’s impossible to navigate on mobile or tablet, it’s not going to work out. No matter what theme you select, make sure you check it on mobile, tablet and desktop. It also needs to work well on different browsers. So check it on Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.
  • SEO friendly. There’s no much use in having a beautiful website if no one can find it! Make sure you read your theme’s small print. It needs to be optimized for SEO or you will find it very difficult to appear in Google search results.
  • Do they offer support? If something breaks and you don’t know how to fix it, is there some type of support?

Summing Up the Best WordPress Themes

Obviously, no one wants to pay for a WordPress theme that sucks.

Many paid themes out there can look great in the demo but when you go to use it or customize it, it ends up being a total disaster.

Starting a website, blog, or business can be expensive, and the last thing I want you to do is waste your money!

The 4 WordPress themes listed above will help you to avoid just that and make your life a lot easier.

Good Luck!

I created this blog to provide super helpful information and advice regarding all things health and wealth. I love creating content related to making money online and also ways to live a happy and healthy life. Enjoy!
